Crouching Lion
This is one of a pair of Vatican lions. The originals of these magnificient lions are from a pair sculpted by
Antonio Canova (1757-1822) for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, Rome.
The lion is symbol of the Roman and Macedonian empires, carried by Roman emperors such as Caesar
and Macedonian kings such as Philip of Macedon and Alexander the Great.
