The griffin (also spelt gryphon, griffon or gryphin) is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and either a
head of an eagle or a lion. The female has the wings of an eagle. The male (known as a keythong) has
projecting spikes instead of wings and is less frequently depicted. In the artwork of ancient Persia, as well as
in the artwork of other parts of the ancient world from Scythia to Macedonia and Greece, the Griffin has special
place. In Babylon the griffin has lions head and body but wings of an eagle. Babylon was conquered by the
Persians and then by Alexander the Great and the Macedonians. Its famous walls depict the lion griffins.
