Tantric Tibetan Buddhist Calendar Wall Relief Sculpture
Item No. 8001S
Reproduction after Museum Original
This calendar shows a synthesis of Chinese, and Tibetan Buddhist influences that are typical of the Tantric
art of Tibet. In the center of the calendar there is a wheel with the eight trigrams that comprise the 64
hexagrams of the I Ching, and outside of that center section we see the animal that symbolize the 12 years
of the Chinese calendar. That central area is being dovoured by Vajrapani. Vajrapani is the embodiment of
the spiritual strength of the Buddhas. He appears in a wrathful aspect, displaying his power to overcome
outer, inner and secret obstacles At the top of the relief there are several Buddhist deities lead by Manjusri,
the Lord of Wisdom, cutting through ignorance with his sword.
