Seleucid Kings of Syria
Antiochus IX Cyzicenus (114-95 BC) Silver Tetradrachm
Weight 16 g. Diameter 30 mm.
Obverse: Diademed head of Antiochus IX Cyzicenus with short beard right, superb portrait, one of the
most beautiful Antiochos IX Kyzikenos busts ever seen. Reverse: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ANTIOXΟΥ ΦΙΛOΠATOPOΣ,
Athena standing left holding Nike and spear, shield at feet. This mint is very rare under the brief reign of
Antiochos IX from 114 to 95 B.C. The few coins of Antiochos IX from Sidon and Ake Ptolemais exibit a
superb and unique style and are considered by many to be of the finest struck during his reign. Very
attractive light toning enhances this piece. Superb portrait wonderfully centered and complete on a large
flan. Very valuable scarce coin of a scarce Seleucid king.
