Menander (155-130 B.C.) Silver Bilingual Drachm

Weight 2.4 g.  Diameter 17 mm.

Obverse: Nice diademed heroically posed bust of Menander left, seen from back, brandishing spear
ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ  ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ MENANΔPOY.  Reverse: Athena Alkidemos right, holding shield and thunderbolt;

Menander (Milanda) is the only Hellenistic king celebrated in ancient Indian literature. A noted philosopher,
he was one of the two leading characters of a treatise Milindpanha (Questions of Milinda). This book
discusses fundamental principles of Buddhist philosophy which is narrated in form of a dialogue between
King Milinda and a Buddhist scholar.
