Bronze cold cast sculpture of Giovanni Bologna: Medici Horse

Our Medici Horse is based on a model by Giovanni Bologna (Italian, 1527–1608) that was
probably cast in the workshop of sculptor Giovanni Francesco Susini (Italian, ca. 1575–1653).
Bologna's models were created for the equestrian statue of Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici in the
Piazza della Signoria in Florence, which was finished in 1593. The Medici family ruled the city of
Florence and later Tuscany during most of the period from 1434–1737. Cosimo I de' Medici
(Italian, 1519–1574) in particular was known for promoting order and justice, encouraging the
growth of trade and industry, and fostering a period of art and building in Florence and beyond.
Produced in cooperation with the Princely Collections of Liechtenstein.
