Bronze cold cast Karl Bitter's Diana
Born in Vienna, Karl Bitter (American, 1867–1915) studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and
later carved stone ornaments for public buildings. He immigrated to New York in 1889, and in
addition to distinguishing himself at a firm specializing in architectural and monumental sculpture,
the artist also produced portrait and ideal subjects. Diana, one of his few small-scale pieces,
demonstrates his skillful handling of the nude form, a legacy of his European academic training.
Our sculpture is molded directly from the 1910 bronze original that depicts the sylvan huntress
standing contemplatively with her signature bow and crescent.
