Mino da Fiesole: Renaissance Virgin and Child 15 century plaque relief

Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Date: 15th century
Period: Italian Renaissance

Our reproduction is based on a marble relief, Virgin and Child, by the Renaissance sculptor Mino
da Fiesole (Italian [Florentine], 1429–1484). The original relief, now in the Museum’s collection,
depicts the Virgin holding the Christ Child, seated on a cushion, with her veil falling over his lap.
The baby Christ holds in his left hand an orb surmounted by a cross while he raises his right hand
in benediction—symbols associated with Christ. Both figures appear gracefully subdued, as if
engaged in silent contemplation. The tender, protective gesture of the Virgin’s right hand is
especially poignant.
