Young Girl with Doves (5th century BC) Greek relief sculpture
Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Date: 5th century B.C.
Period: Greek
The marble relief on which this plaque is based was found on the Greek island of Paros in 1775
and dates back to the 5th century B.C. The gentle gravity of the child's expression is sweetly
depicted in this farewell to her pet doves. Her peplos is unbelted and falls open at the side, while
the folds of her drapery clearly reveal her stance. Many of the most skillful Greek stone carvers
came from islands in the Aegan Sea, such as Paros, where marble was plentiful. Our reproduction
captures the emotion and innocence of the original in the Museum's collection.
