Motifs from richly ornamented historical monuments, textiles, and paintings often appeared in the jewelry of the nineteenth century. A popular interest in the Middle Ages led to the Gothic Revival architecture that predominated in England throughout much of the Victorian era; Gothic Revival architecture in turn influenced the design of jewelry. Gothic Revival jewelry was characterized by the use of simple forms, such as crosses and quatrefoils that were decorated with cabochon stones or colored enamels. Our Victorian Cross is based on a late 19th-century English amethyst cross that features fine filigree wire work, a characteristic of late Victorian jewelry.
