Pella, Macedonia
Next Page
Pella, the capital of ancient Macedonia, birthplace of Alexander the Great, was one of the most beautiful
cities in antiquity.  It was build in grid-pattern with streets intersecting each other in perfect harmony, with
sophisticated sewage system, and stunning architecture.  The city is still yet to be fully excavated, but from
what has been discovered so far it is clear that the ancient Macedonians had a profound taste in art. By the
4th century BC, they had created complex beautiful large mosaics with precise geometric patterns and
detailed scenes of people and animals, the earliest mosaics found on European soil. Mosaics did not
decorate the palaces of the Macedonian kings, private hosuses also were adorned with mosaics.
