Florence Lion of Palazzo Vecchio Statue and Base
Palazzo Vecchio Lion - The Lion, symbol of Florence, stands in the entrance courtyard of Palazzo Vecchio. The Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) is the town hall of Florence. With the tower and crenellations it looks more like a castle or fortress than a town hall, and that was the intention of the builder, Arnolfo di Cambio (builder of the Cathedral as well as Santa Croce)... he wanted to provide a strong protective structure for the town leaders in case of trouble, which happened often enough. This is a view of Arnolfo’s Tower, taken from the side of the Uffizi Gallery late in the afternoon. It shows the embrasures from which boiling oil or rocks could be dropped on attackers (the walls also had crenellations and embrasures mounted). Proudly seated atop an optional, stately plinth, our powerfully muscular icon will lend quiet strength and courage whether flanking an entryway or standing sentinel near a garden gate. Unparalleled as classic art, our enviable, quality designer resin, faux stone sculpture is a study in affordable elegance.
