Etruscan art was the form of figurative art produced by the Etruscan civilization in northern Italy between the 9th and 2nd centuries BC. Particularly strong in this tradition were figurative sculpture in terracotta (particularly life-size on sarcophagi or temples) and cast bronze, wall-painting and metalworking. The Romans would later come to absorb the Etruscan culture into theirs but would also be greatly influenced by them and their art. It will also build on the earlier Hellenistic art. Our knowledge of ancient Roman sculpture, painting, mosaics, and metalwork relies in large part on the preservation of artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum, which was preserved after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The ancient Romans created impressive sculpture, portraiture, historical relief, funerary reliefs, sarcophagi, and copies of ancient Greek works. Roman sculpture was heavily influenced by Greek examples, in particular bronzes. It is only thanks to some Roman copies that knowledge of Greek originals is preserved. Here at Ancient Sculpture Gallery we offer a full line of Roman art – sculptures, mosaics, Roman glass, vases, shields and helmets.
