Customer commissioned reproduction of a section of the famous Roman fresco for the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale near Pompeii (about 50–40 BC). The villa was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79 this fresco is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Customer requested that the fresco be painted on two horizontal panels in total size almost 8 feet x 7 feet (240 cm x 208 cm). The reproduction is to restore the fresco’s original look, without any aging, just as it looked when it was originally made. When completed the two panels would be shipped and installed onsite.
Customer requested that the both sides of the fresco reproduction are flanked by fluted pilasters capped with Corinthian capitals and bases. The 2 fluted pilasters, 2 Corinthian capitals and 2 bases were shipped to us unpainted. They were made of MDF composite materials and we were asked to paint them to give an illusion as if they were made of pink and white marble. The 2 pilasters would be in pink marble with white and brown veining, while the 2 Corinthian capitals and 2 bases would be in white marble with grey-black veining. This we accomplished by painting the surfaces in several batches and blending the veining into the background. Finally, a clear coat was applied to protect the coloring effects and with buffing a marble sheen was achieved.
The word fresco comes from the Italian word affresco which derives from the Latin word for "fresh". The earliest known examples of frescoes found on the island of Crete date at around 1500 B.C. While some similar frescoes have been found in other locations around the Mediterranean basin, particularly in Egypt and Morocco, their origins are subject to speculation. The most common form of fresco was Egyptian wall paintings in tombs. Frescoes were also painted in ancient Greece, but few of these works have survived. In southern Italy, at Paestum, which was a Greek colony, a tomb containing frescoes dating back to 470 B.C. was discovered, the so-called Tomb of the Diver. These frescoes depict scenes of the life and society of ancient Greece, and constitute valuable historical testimonials. One shows a group of men reclining at a symposium while another shows a young man diving into the sea. In Macedonia we find that frescos decorated houses, palaces, and tombs of the Macedonians. Roman houses such as those discovered in the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, were rich with frescos. Roman frescoes were painted on the still damp plaster of the wall, so that the painting became part of the wall, a colored plaster. Late Roman Empire (1st-2nd century A.D.) frescoes were found in catacombs beneath Rome. The late Medieval period and the Renaissance saw the most prominent use of fresco, particularly in Italy, where most churches and many government buildings still feature fresco decoration.
In this example customer wanted a reproduction of an ancient Etruscan fresco. Customer sent us a scan from a book of the Etruscan tomb original from the 6th Century B.C. First, we created a thick reinforced cast stone panel in the specific dimensions requested by the customer and then painted the fresco with aging technique. Dents and chips were inflicted to the top layer to reproduce the ancient look.
