  5. Fiberstone Sculptures FAQ Go Top

    1. What is Fiberstone / Fiberglass?

Our products are made from strong high resistant Fiberstone/ Fiberglass and coated with stain finish. Fiberstone is a mixture of sand and stones cast into the surface using terrazzo-like techniques. The surface is then sandblasted and chemically treated, and then hand painted with an antique acid stain to give the appearance of aged stone. Since it is reinforced with a fiberglass backing, it remains less fragile and lighter alternative to concrete and cast stone. By mastering the art of casting our products in fiberglass we manage to retain all the detail or the original with the added benefits of less weight, greater strength, and product suitability for both indoor and outdoor use. The advantages of fiberstone and fiberglass when compared to concrete, cast stone, and cement are that they are about half the weight, are far less fragile, and much more resistant. These sculptures and architectural elements can be displayed both indoor and outdoor in your garden year round.

    2. What kind of coloring finish do you apply to the fiberstone product?

We offer a wide variety of finishes for our Fiberstone items. Each of the products in this gallery is pictured here in one finish; however, each is also available in any other finishes. Please review our available finishes and specify at checkout (or email us after placing your order) your choice between pictured finish and other optional finishes. Please review our listings to get a get a better idea of how these finishes look like.

We do not use paint color as brushing technique on our products, but are aging them with a rusting technique. Naturally, because each piece is hand finished, there will be slight variations in the resulting antique finish. Thus no two products are identical and each piece we produce is unique in itself.

    3. Can the columns and caryatids be used as construction material?

  10. Bronze Fountains and Sculptures FAQ Go Top

    1. Bronze (Lost Wax) and Bronze (Cold Cast) difference?

Our bronze sculptures are made either in Cold Cast Bronze or Lost Wax Bronze (hot cast bronze). Cold Cast Bronze and Lost Wax Bronze and two different methods of creating bronze objects.

      1) Lost Wax or Hot-Cast Bronze is actual 100% pure Bronze - essentially copper and tin. The making of a Lost Wax Bronze is a complex and time consuming process, and specific technical expertise is needed to accomplish the task of making a bronze. The most known and used process for making sculpture is called the "Lost Wax" Process, and involves pouring of molten bronze. Our larger sculptures are made of Lost Wax Bronze.

      2) Cold-Cast Bronze, also referred to as "bonded bronze," is a product made from resin mixed/blended with pure bronze powder to give it the appearance of the true bronze. It looks just as a lost was bronze object does - both are bronzes. Some of our smaller sculptures are made of cold cast bronze.

The cost for making a lost wax bronze statue is much greater than that of a cold-cast bronze statue. A sculpture made of lost wax bronze would be several times more expensive then one made in cold cast bronze. Lost Wax bronze is also heavier then cold cast bronze. Yet in either of the above materials, the casts (the final product made out of the mold) are made using the same rubber mold; which is taken from the original sculpture. Thus, the final result is exactly the same bronze sculpture, only made in a different bronze material. With the cold cast we still achieve the same bronze effect at much lower cost and thus is more affordable.

  12. Byzantine Icons FAQ Go Top

    1. How are your Byzantine Icons created?

For creation of our icons we use and apply traditional Byzantine methods and materials which have been tested over many centuries. The base of the icon is a traditional high quality durable wood covered with a layer of canvas and several layers of gesso. After completing the painting on the panel with professionally created egg tempera paint, several layers of bole (burnishing clay) are applied to the background to prepare them for the receiving of 24K gold leaf, and after gilding, gold is burnished using agate burnisher.

As a final finish for our icons we use linseed oil based varnish. Finally a degree of aging can be applied to the icon, which depends of your personal choice. You can view several aging results in our list of Completed Icons and chose the style your like. Of course, you may also elect your icon not to be aged. Let us know what your preference is when placing the order. While some other works of art require some special conditions for their preservation (most typically protection from light), paintings in egg tempera on wood, finished with linseed oil based varnish are best preserved under the same, moderate conditions of light, humidity, temperature and cleanliness of air that are optimal for human habitation. This is why our Byzantine Icons are timeless investment set to be enjoyed by many generations of your family. For a detailed explanation of the creation process see below.
