During the sixth century B.C. in Greece, Athens, the principal city of Attica, became one of the wealthiest city-states and a leader in artistic achievement. Among the many characteristics that distinguish sculpture produced at that time are the meticulously rendered surface details. Our Winged Sphinx sculpture is a reproduction of a Greek (Attic) sphinx fragment made of limestone around 550-525 B.C. now in the Museum's collection. Of particular note on the original are the breast feathers indicated with compass-drawn arcs, and the flight feathers shown with thin bands and slight gradations of relief. These masterly details are faithfully reproduced on the Museum's version.
