Our sculpture is based on a Roman copy from around A.D. 41-54. The original bronze statue, from the 5th century B.C., is attributed to Polykleitos, a famous Greek sculptor. Polykleitos sought rigorous, mathematically based proportions in his figures. His attention to the smallest details can be seen in the precise design of each lock of hair on this young athlete’s head.
