14K gold, with rubies and cultured freshwater pearls, and a 14K gold chain. Cross length 1 1/2 in.; chain length 16 in. The versatility of oil paint made it an essential factor in realizing the new artistic vision of early Netherlandish painting, which combined extraordinary realism with brilliant color. Toward the end of the 16th century, Juan de Flandes (Netherlandish, active in Spain by 1496, died 1519) was in the service of Queen Isabella of Castile. His elegant and delicately rendered works reflected the refined tastes of the queen, a learned and distinguished patron of the arts. The Museum's cross is based on a cross in Saints Michael and Francis, an oil painting by Flandes that was probably part of an elaborate multi-panel altarpiece commissioned in 1505 for the chapel of the University of Salamanca. In the painting, St. Michael stands to the left and spears a dragon while St. Francis stands to the right displaying his stigmata. Although the figures are painted, Flandes emphasizes the sculptural presence of the two saints by placing them in gold niches.
