Description

Selket was one of four goddesses whose figures were placed in Tutankhamun’s tomb to guard the king’s remains. The original figure was made of wood overlaid with gesso and gilded, and the eyes and eyebrows are painted in black. The goddess stands with arms outstretched, in an attitude of protection. On her head is her emblem, the scorpion. Selket was noted for her magical powers, particularly in treating the sting of a scorpion. Great care has been taken in the finishing of the Museum’s cast resin figure. The eyes were hand-painted and the gold leaf was painstakingly applied by hand, in the Museum’s Reproduction Studio.
